We gathered at the church at 6:00pm. |
| The May outing was to Knobstone Trail, which is a rugged 58 mile trial that starts near Deam Lake in southern Indiana, heads North and ends in the Jackson-Washington State Forest. Our destination for this weekend's trip was the northern tip of the trail, which is a 8 mile loop trail called Delaney Park Loop. | |
| We arrived at Delaney Creek Park about 7:30pm and found a great parking spot for the bus near the trail head. | ![]() Medium - Large |
| We headed up the trail and here the key word is UP. From the trail start we increased elevation 200 feet in less than a mile. What a way to start the backpacking hike. That first mile was extra-long. At about 8:45 we started looking for a campsite, as it was now dusk. We saw a couple wide spots in the trail, but decided to continue on. Glad we did. Just up the trail we found a great big clearing off the trail. We all decided that this campsite is one that we should come back to. Would be great location for Scout skills training. | |
| Due to a couple of Scouts that canceled at the last minute, it turned out that there was a tent shortage. So with doubling up, and a couple of volunteers to sleep out under the stars we set up camp. Part of Scouting is BE PREPARED. We had a nice discussion about what that means during our campfire that night and a good lesson was learned. | ![]() Medium - Large |

Two of the Scout's watches contained barometers, so there was a prediction that the clear night sky would lead to rain before morning. Well about 1:00 they were right. The wind picked up and the rain started. As it started to rain the two outdoor campers used the alternative plan that had been established, and triple bunked in the tents. The rain was off and on for most of the night, but never really got too bad. |
| The next morning it was only a light drizzle, to the point that most of the scouts didn't even bother to put on their rain gear. Breakfast was prepared and camp packed up. We were back on the trail about 9:30. | ![]() Medium - Large |
![]() Medium - Large | It turned out that the worst part of the trail had been the Friday night. The trail wandered around quite but so it was adventurous, but not a killer trail. Our goal was to get to the lookout tower and then stop for lunch. |
| We stopped periodically to check our maps, but were not locating the lookout tower. Around noon, we stopped and checked our maps again. It was then we realized that the two maps we had, which we thought were exactly alike, were slightly different. Therefore we could not be certain exactly where the lookout tower was. We searched for about a half an hour, then decide to stop and break for lunch. | ![]() Medium - Large |
| After lunch we had to make a decision. The second part of the loop trail, looked like we should allow about 4 hours for it, which would have really pressed us for time. So we decided to opted for just continuing on the Delaney Park Trail, and head back to the bus. Well the double time pace that was set, got us back to the bus around 1:30. | |

| There was a stream and lake near where the bus parked. So the guys, just kicked off their boots, and put their feet into the cold spring water. Talk about refreshing! | |
| We finally herded up the group, packed up the bus and headed out about 3:30. As we bounced through the field with the bus, the muffler came loose. Dr. Reichard used his years of medical training and with some quick field surgery was performed. A temporary repair was made and we hit the road. | |
| Made a quick stop at McDonalds as we passed through Salem on the way home. Got back to the Church pretty much on schedule, arriving Saturday evening about 5:45pm. | ![]() Medium - Large |
