It was a great clear morning, as we packed up and left the church around 9:00am. | |

The adventure trip to Hoosier National Forest was quite a thrill. Along with 6 experienced scouts, there were 5 new scouts that had just joined the troop. Do to the new scouts, we purposely set out on a trail that was flexible and could be adapted to the abilities of the new scouts.
|
|
WELL-- there sure was a surprise. As the new scouts sang their way along the trail, some of the experienced scouts (and adults) struggled to keep up. We originally hoped to hike around one of the twin lakes in the Hoosier National Forest. Well, with the pace that was set, we were completed with the one lake by 1:30. So we decided to hike the second lake. We made it to our campsite around 3:30. I think the new guys could have completed the entire trail if we would have let them. |

Great weather on Saturday, which probably had a lot to do with the miles we traveled. It was a great partly sunny day, which reached 70 degrees in the afternoon. Had a "quick" lunch along the trail.
|
We found a great campsite beside the lake, next to a trickling waterfall, which was a great source of water. We still needed to purify the water with iodine tablets, but the waterfall sure was convenient. As we actually set up camp fairly early, we had time to explore the area.
Some of the scouts really got into looking at all the really neat, bizarro bugs. Which including wolf spiders and a 5 inch millipede.
Unfortunately the campsite had a lot of previous visitor's trash. We normally work to leave the area we camp in to be in better condition that when we found it. But the amount of bottles, tires and trash prevented us from doing this. But we did carry some out (had to slow down those new guys some how). |

Had a great campfire Saturday night. After telling a few stories, we sang the "Scout Vesper", put out the campfire -- demonstrating good scout skills, and went to bed around 9:30.

During the night it started to rain, so we woke to a light rain that lasted the entire day. Wasn't a hard rain, just a constant drizzle.
|
Communications regarding breakfast got crossed, and one of the patrols didn't bring their food supplies. But true to our troop's heritage, where we always bring too much food, the two other cooking groups shared their rations, so no scout left camp starving (only one hollow leg filled).
We packed up our tents, put on our rain gear and headed out on the trail. There was only about 2 hours of hiking and we made it back to the bus around 11:00. Many of the scouts, having been on wet trips before, had brought an extra change of clothes, socks and shoes, that they had left on the bus. It sure was nice to have some dry clothes to change into for the ride home.

We made it back to the church at about 1:05pm. While the parents watched the wet packs unloaded from the bus, we announced to everyone to make sure and have a thorough tick check when they got home. The ticks were in abundance on this trip! |
Now you have to understand that it has been many years since the troop has been able to complete both trails in a single weekend -- but to do it with new scouts, it was truly amazing. The entire 13 mile trail is one of the more difficult trips this troop takes. Looks like we're going to have to find some new challenging trails for the troop.
The following scout slang for mileage references was developed
"Just up ahead" 1 to 2 miles
"Be there soon" 3 to 4 miles
"Almost there" 5 to 6 miles
"Just around the corner" 7 to 8 miles
"It will be awhile" You're starting Misha Mockwa trail
"About a mile up-ahead" You're starting Philmont trail
Next Month's Adventure
The May 16th -17th outing location is still being finalized. Do to adult leaders scheduling conflicts, we will be doing a Friday night (May 16th) camp out, leaving the church around 6:00pm and hiking on Saturday. We will return to the church late Saturday afternoon, May17th.
