MARCH ADVENTURE REPORT

Harrison - Crawford Forestry

March 22, 1997

It was a good morning, with no rain in the forecast.

This weekend trip was going to be different from the our troop's normal monthly outing. Our troop normally goes on backpacking trips, but since we invited local Cub Scout Weblos to join us, we had decided to do a base camp overnight, with a day hike.
We finally got everyone together, and loaded the bus, including the remains of a tower building project that had been stored in the scout room for quite awhile (that's what's on top of the bus).
Our trip was going to take us to the Harrison-Crawford forestry near Corydon, Indiana. When we started nearing the area, we noticed that many of the trails and campground areas had been closed due to flooding in the area two weeks before.
The trail bridge had been washed out in the earlier flood, so the trail was no longer a circle. We adjusted our plans and had the troop bus drop us off at one end of the trail, with a meeting place at the other end of the trail at 3:00pm.
The scout bus, with a couple of leaders went back to get a base camp established and start cooking dinner.

Shortly after starting the trail, we found that a section of the trail was closed. After "scouting" about we found the continuation of our trail. As we hiked we were surprised how much litter was along the trail. We made it our goal to pickup all that was not left by nature. However we did leave one can behind that had become the home to a swarm of bees.

The trail lead us up and down three big hills, with the middle one being the largest. We found a plateau on which to eat our lunch and view the surrounding country side and soak up bits of sunshine.

We headed to the pickup point looking forward to going back and setting up camp for the night.
When we got back to the base camp, we set up our camping area.
Though the adults tried, they weren't totally successful in keeping the hungry scouts out of the kitchen upon their return.
We set up a scout skill area and went over some basic scouting functions. Spent most of the time practicing tying knots.
Well 6 O'clock finally rolled around and dinner was ready. It was one of the biggest pots of chili you could imagine. The chili got nick named "Lumber Jack Chili" for all the hearty stuff that was in it. Not only could everyone go back for seconds, but thirds and fourths too!
Had a great campfire that night. None of the pictures from the campfire turned out (too dark). It was not only a full moon, but got to see the Hale-Bop comet.

The weather got a little chilly and frost was on the tents when we woke up Sunday morning. Breakfast was scrambled eggs and bacon, oatmeal and hot chocolate. Someone must have known that it would be cold in the morning.
We broke camp, did a thorough policing of the camp area, to make sure we left it better than when we came. Time came to load up the bus (minus all the wood) and head back to the church. We got back about 11:15 and got all the scout stuff back in the scout room before church let out so that we weren't in the way.

Overall it was great trip, and everyone was exicted about the Court of Honor coming up on Wednesday (Double Eagle ceremony).
Next month we're backpacking in the Hoosier National Forest, Twin Lakes Trail. Due to Thunder Over Louisville, our trip is moved one weekend to the fourth weekend in April (April 26-27)

See you then.
